Herons Bonsai
Великобритания
Добавлен 2 окт 2014
Herons Bonsai, based in Newchapel in the UK and founded by Dawn and Peter Chan in 1986, is Britain's premier Bonsai nursery. On its extensive seven and half acre landscaped site you can relax and enjoy all aspects of this fascinating hobby. It is literally a Bonsai heaven for anyone interested in the pastime. The sheer scale of the site and the range and selection of trees makes Herons a 'must visit' venue for both bonsai enthusiasts and gardeners alike. It isn't surprising why we continue to be Britain's Number 1 bonsai centre! You only have to look at the website to see what we have to offer, and when you visit us - you will know why we are still simply THE best in the UK.

Repotting & Styling A Customers Bonsai Collection
Thank you Peter for this episode and thank you for being so generous with your wisdom ... not only Bonsai related. 🐒🌳
Love them
Beaitiful azaleas
Thank you. I learned something
A very timely video. I just frazzled my trident maple forest group.. It’s really hard to keep up even my small collection when it’s hot and dry in my near desert climate in the American Rocky Mountain west. I took Peters advice and leaf trimmed it and now I will cross my fingers and keep watering.
I just found a black pussy willow at a hardware store by me and I want to know if you have made bonsai out of any of these willows and what do you recommend
"Even monkeys fall out of trees" I'm going use that at work 😂
Anyone know if this tree survived? Asking because I’m trying the same thing with my tree
What a great demonstration! I’m creating my own, this gave me the confidence to start cutting.
Well your pretty tricky
Such beauty.I love your videos. Thank you.
"I don't have to tell you what I'm doing, I'm watering my trees."😂😂😂
Muy interesante el vídeo, una pregunta...repasamos los despuntes con pasta cicatrizante.gracias
🙏Thank you for reassuring me about the mapples. I was just panicking and desperate for all my mapples which are dried out. We are in a heat wave for a couple of days (30°C, 40°C with humidex), so my trees are thirty🥵. Greetings from 🇨🇦.
I still use stripped electrical wire haha
Very timely video since we are under a heatwave here in New England (US).

very helpful video, i wish i knew this 2 years ago as i had an old maple die on me :(
I had never owned a bonsai. I'd seen them and thought they were beautiful but somehow a little mystical. I saw some breathtaking ones at Chelsea in the 90s. I wonder if they were yours? AnywayI bought my own very small cheap one a few weeks ago and needed guidance on watering. Your video came up and my husband and i sat rapt listening to you talk for half an hour or so about watering a "pot plant". Now that is a skill! Your videos are a joy. Your attitude is beautiful. I watch them and feel refreshed and i feel gently motivated having learnt something. As someone has said further down, you are a class act. More people should garden. The world would be a much happier place. I'm thankful you are there to guide us.
5.36 we’re not talking of winter image 😂😂😂love that comment, the Boss is not happy
My little maple did the same thing in my heatwave last month! I did this and now there are tons of buds all over it and the leafs are unfurling ❤
Thank you Peter. Really good info.
Thanks Peter, Now I know what to do when the monkey falls out of the tree you cut the leaves. 🤔 Thanks for the insight. Take care and have a blessed week.🙏🙏🙏
I look forward to the update video!
Mr. Chan, a bit off subject but when taking care of new air layering…. Using spag. moss, how often should I water the new layering …..? Can you over soak the roots? Thanks in advance.
If you wrap the plastic tightly round the moss ball - it should not dry out at all. We never have to water the moss ball once the air layering is made. We just wait for the new roots to emerge
@@peterchan3100 thanks for quick reply. My question was pertaining to after the plant is separated from the parent plant and put into a container with the spag. moss. I’ve seen where you have places in a tray containing an inch or two of water…. I was wondering if outside, how often should you water? Again, thanks for all of the information you share, I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
Thanks for your advises!. I´m learning a lot with your videos. Quick question: Do you think it would be good to follow same process when collecting a tree and big part of the root system is lost?. Just recently I collected some mapple seedlings from cracks on the side walk in front of my house but big chunks of the root systems were cut off while I tried to pull the seedlings. Thanks in advace.
It might help but if your collected seedling did not have much root to begin with - then the chances are slim.
@@peterchan3100 Thanks for your reply!. :)
Bonsai 🐐
I absolutely love your videos,I was wondering why you didn’t use bonsai soil. It looked like you used the soil it came in.
A good tip to know 👍
Hi Peter, just purchased my first acer, it's not a bonsai yet since it needs a lot of training so I am looking to get wire, and then try to control it a bit by cutting some of the branches as it is so vigorous that each node has 3-6 offshoots. Since it's a young sapling still, it looks like maybe a 3-4 year old, I am unsure as to whether I should watch out for something in case I mess up, or should I go with the flow, wire it to the desired future shape and give a good ol' haircut every now and then? The climate is the same as at your nursery.
Just keep pruning the growing tips to create more twigginess / Ramification and you will get there.
@@peterchan3100 Thank you for the response, was also wondering what size wire would be suitable for such a young tree. Amazon has 1mm,1.5mm and 2mm wire packs, but I wanted to work a bit with the trunk too since it's still somewhere malleable, and I do not know if 2mm is enough? Or maybe Amazon is not the best place to buy wire 😅. I must get plane tickets to UK and visit herons for a workshop at some point, but for now I guess I'll keep watching all of the videos!
Would this same idea be applied to a branch being air layered? I have an arakawa Japanese maple whose leaves got a little fried in the summer. Should I defoliate the branch?
Be a bit careful as defoliation at this stage might not encourage roots to develop on the air layering. Best not to.
Love the video Peter it’s good to know what I should do if it all goes wrong. Peter I bought a tree from you last august for my birthday and came and met you. It’s Andy from bonsai crazy. I was hoping I would be able to get a one to one lesson from you for my birthday this year. Using the tree I purchased from you, as being a beginner I really need it 😂😂 Being a RUclipsr myself it may be an opportunity for a video for yourself. How much would a personal lesson cost, or is it on the website?? Thanks Peter // Andy 👊👊
Contact our office and our staff will be able to advise you.
If my Japanese maple is predominantly leaf scorched does it work the same way. Just cut all the leaves off, or is it a different concept
Try leaf cutting the entire tree. Best to send a pic to our office for more advice
@@peterchan3100 thank you sir
Started raking in the middle as to not "hack" the roots.... When he gets the roots exposed, he hacks/cuts them off.... lol
This just happen to me thank you so much. My tree got much sun. Can I cover my maple during the peak our of the day?
Give it some shade during the day
Mother Nature refuses to allow for rain in Virginia. Dryer than a bone.
😂 I love that phrase "even monkeys fall out of trees" and have usded it many times since learning it from you!
"Even monkeys fall out of trees..." That's great...!
Thank you Peter, very timely lesson in how to deal with maples in hot weather, all my maples are in a shaded structure so I have no damaged leaves, up to this point I have only had to water in the morning but if and when it becomes much hotter I will water twice along with other deciduous trees. Just a point to mention some pots can get very hot depends on the pot makeup so your idea to place in trays of water will help to keep the pots cooler even if the water is not covering the pot, it still helps, but make sure the water in the trays are not getting warm in very hot periods especially in very hot countries climates.
You are doing well.
Nice, you know where Lithuania is 🎉
Is that shirt from Dan Flash’s? So intricate 😮
Cant remember who gifted that shirt to me.
Has anyone bought a descent fertilizer thats worked best for your bonsai tree. Ive gotten one for my birthday & always have wanted one, now i just want to take care of it right.
Are you using collected rainwater? If so, pressure seems very good 👍
No
Thank you for sharing this. I'm so glad this doesn't only happen to me! Also, good to know that defoliating will help.
Can you presentate your trophy Bonsai, Sir? This we're really awesome
Do you keep them shaded after de-leafing, or back to full sun?
In shade
These Acers are originally sub canopy trees, the leaves are far more delicate because of this, which is why they are being grown under shade, but also, sub canopies tend to have greater humidity and less wind, both things reduce transpiration, and so reduce water stress. So some other ways to help is to reduce wind speeds, and increase humidity.
Our maples in the field are in full sun. Full sun creates better autumn colour.
Thank you. Love your simplicity. Very helpfull.
i fell out of my tree too lol. thanks for another great video peter!
Sorry if I missed it, but how long does it take before you can remove the wire?
